The Complaint: The bedroom doesn't telegraph calm.

The Fix: If walking through the door doesn't wallop you with a dose of instant zen, the paint job may be to blame. Dramatic hues or patterns could be dialing up the energy. "Paint the bedroom a soothing color," Blakeney suggests. "For me, that means colors that feel beachy and calm — light blues, peaceful aquas, and quiet corals."

The Complaint: The bedroom just isn't that comfortable.

The Fix: As the centerpiece of your room, your bed is arguably the most important component of a comfortable sanctuary. Investing in a high-quality mattress that helps you wake up rested and restored is key. "Look for one that's made with breathable materials," such as silk, cashmere, wool, and fine cotton, like the Stearns & Foster mattress pictured here, Blakeney adds.

The Complaint: Oh, look — the neighbors can see right in!

The Fix: Big windows can be both a blessing and a curse, especially if there are neighboring homes close by. Blakeney's practical-yet-chic tip? "Get a double curtain rod and hang a heavy fabric on the outside — I like to use kantha quilts as black-out curtains," she says. " Then hang a romantic voile or linen on the inside for daytime privacy."

The Complaint: The room just feels ... stale.

The Fix: Did you go the minimalist route? Yes, a monochromatic palette and neutrals look elegant, but subdued hues are the first culprits of a boring bedroom. For an instant refresh, liven up your space with plants and fresh flowers. "Boston ferns, red-edged dracaenas, and golden pothos plants are especially good air-purifiers," she says. "Try chrysanthemums and peace lilies to add a pop of pretty."

The Complaint: The bedroom isn't especially kid-friendly.

The Fix: New parents know that the master bedroom gets plenty of little visitors, but there's no need to sacrifice style as the family grows. "When the kiddos are young, it's nice to have a bed that's low to the ground so that kids can easily hop on and off to facilitate those cozy cuddles," Blakeney says. "Opt for a lower, more modern bed that keeps things chic."

The Complaint: The bedroom is always frrrreezing.

The Fix: Getting out of bed in the morning is hard enough; icy floors only make things worse. "Add cozy faux sheepskins to either side of the bed so that you get a soft landing when exiting the bed," Blakeney suggests. Another option: "Cover your floors in soft, shaggy rugs to up the cozy factor and help keep your feet warm."

The Complaint: The bedroom could feel a bit more, er, romantic.

The Fix: Blakeney hears this one often from both singles and couples who live together. One of the most transformative updates for a bedroom is new lighting. "Soft, flattering, and romantic light creates mood," she says. "Set up lighting that can be adjusted from the bed. Candles are also key!"

The Complaint: The room's pretty, but it feels a bit generic.

The Fix: Say goodbye to bare walls. The fastest way to inject personality into a basic bedroom is to hang something up. "Instead of a picture of your parents, hang abstract or figurative art," Blakeney suggests. Choose art that inspires you or makes you feel good whenever you look at it.
