Rearrange My Bedroom
THE WORLD IS FULL of two kinds of people: those who like to rearrange the furniture, and those who hate change.
Some people love to redecorate their homes and move their furniture around, and you're sure to notice a new flow of traffic every time you visit. Others prefer to navigate their homes blindfolded if need be.
No matter which camp your fall into, there are some good reasons to take stock of your bedroom furniture arrangement to see if you can do better. Here's what to consider as you move things around — especially if you're in search of a better night's sleep.
Take Note of the Light
You can help your body fall asleep — and stay asleep — by paying close attention to the way the light streams into your windows at different times of day. If there's a street lamp that shines in and reaches your bed, you may have trouble falling asleep. The same is true for the morning sun, which can wake you up early in the summer. Try to position your bed so at least your head is out of the glare.
Consider Traffic Flow
Your room design should also take into account where you'll need to walk to get to the important things you need: the bed, of course, but also your dresser, closet and the door. It's best to have two to three feet of space around your bed for ease of movement, and you'll want to make sure there's plenty of room for all doors to swing freely. If possible, consider dividing your bedroom into two zones: one for sleeping and one for getting dressed in the morning.
Design for Good Feng Shui
The ancient Asian art of feng shui is all about designing your home so energy, or chi, can flow freely and generally make you feel good. According to feng shui philosophy, your bed should be placed as far from the door as possible, and you should keep the space as uncluttered as possible to promote a sense of peace and calm. It's also important for couples to both feel at home in the space, so be sure both partners have a night table, light and anything else they need instead of having to share.
Why Bother Rearranging Your Bedroom?
Even if you're a creature of habit, psychologists note that rearranging furniture can give people a mood boost. The idea here is that considering new bedroom layout ideas opens your mind to new possibilities and engages your creativity. It also keeps you busy, and working with your hands has also been shown to increase your sense of wellbeing.
It may take a bit of time to get used to a new furniture layout, but for most people, the positive feelings that come with a refresh outweigh the initial confusion when you wake up in the morning. Of course, if you find that you're still not adjusting to the new arrangement after a week or two, it's probably a sign that your old furniture set-up was working better for you.
The best part about rearranging the furniture to get a new look — instead of buying new items or slapping up a new coat of paint — is that it's very easy to experiment and undo your work. You can relax in the knowledge that nothing is permanent, so go ahead and give a new arrangement a try!
